Episode #89: Rewire Your Thinking featuring Mel Schwartz

“The most important relationship you will ever have is not with your parents, your children, your partner, your lover. The relationship that will impact you far more than any other is with your thoughts. They are your constant companion. You need to turn your thoughts into your ally.”

The way we act, feel and behave are oftentimes directly connected to the internal conversations we have with ourselves. If our self-talk is filled with self-doubt, harsh criticism, and catastrophic predictions, our lives will be reflective of the same. If we reinforce positive affirmations in our minds, exercise grace and regularly practice patience when we slip up, our lives will be reflective of this.

Our relationship with negative emotions such as anxiousness, fearfulness and uncertainty are also key and can cause us to spin down a negative path if we’re not mindful. Once we accept that these emotions are a normal reality of life, the feelings associated with fear and uncertainty have less impact over us.

When we change our relationship with fear and embrace it instead of pushing it away, it tends to dissolve and we therefore open up ourselves to new possibilities and potential.

“I found that in my work, I teach people to see their fearful thought and be able to say, it's just a thought, right? I don't have to become that thought and it works. It just works. So the principles of the possibility principle are embracing uncertainty, invite inseparability and that helps us in every aspect of our lives,”

Mel Schwartz is a psychotherapist, marriage counselor, author, speaker, and seminar leader in private practice in Westport, CT and Manhattan for more than two decades. He is the author of 3 books including his latest, “The Possibility Principle.”
