Episode #18: The Iron Mom featuring Lara Brown

“I learned pretty quickly that there's sort of two roads, you could go down with a cancer diagnosis. It's like you could sit and dwell on the Why me? But the reality is that it is you so you gotta shift your mindset and like, Why not you?”

June 27th, 2016 will forever be a day that Lara Brown will never forget.

It was on this day that received a call from a surgeon at North York General Hospital informing her of her breast cancer diagnosis. The shocking news caught her off guard considering the fact that the 37 year old (at the time) had no family history of cancer, was an avid marathon runner, non-smoker and she ate well.

But as we know, cancer doesn't discriminate.

Instead of feeling sorry for herself, Lara picked herself up and began her treatment plan of chemotherapy and radiation. As opposed to adopting the “why me” approach, she embraced the "Why not me?" attitude.

She still remained active by working out every single day while undergoing treatment and during a meeting with her radiologist, Lara asked if I could run during radiation. The radiologist said, “I am not a runner, however, cancer patients start off with a lot of energy and then it usually drops, so maybe you should just walk”.

The idea of giving up running and walking instead t didn't sit right with Brown and it was at that point that she decided that she would do things on her terms moving forward and begin training for an Ironman marathon which consists of:

• 3.8km swim followed by a;
• 180km bike ride and then a
• 42.2km run.

Fast forward to October 7th, 2017, (exactly 16 months after her breast cancer diagnosis) to when Lara could hear those magical words as she crossed the finish line, “Lara Brown, you are an Ironman”.

Lara shares her story of resiliency and determination on The Audacious Living Podcast.
