Episode #717 Your Past Doesn't Get to Decide What Works for You Now
“How can we dare even be as audacious enough to say, well, what didn't work for me back then isn't gonna work for me now?”
— Jason Palter

How much of what you believe about yourself is based on who you are today, and how much comes from experiences that happened to an earlier version of you? Certified hypnotist Jason Palter explores what can happen when we challenge those old conclusions and become willing to change from the inside out.
Episode Summary
What happens when the beliefs, habits and fears operating beneath the surface begin influencing what's possible in our lives?
Jason Palter, owner of the Greater Toronto Hypnosis Centre, joins Audley for a wide-ranging conversation about hypnosis, the subconscious mind and our capacity for change. Jason's own story reflects that idea: after a difficult divorce in 2012, an unexpected introduction to hypnosis eventually led him to open his practice in 2013, building a new professional chapter on top of years spent as a magician, performer and corporate speaker.
Together, Jason and Audley unpack some of the misconceptions surrounding hypnosis, including the idea that someone can take control of your mind. Jason explains hypnosis instead as a collaborative process in which the individual remains aware and ultimately responsible for making the change.
The conversation reaches beyond hypnosis into something even more universal: the danger of allowing an old experience to become permanent evidence about what's possible today. As Jason points out, the person who tried something 20 years ago may have since accumulated relationships, responsibilities, experiences and an entirely different perspective.
Sometimes living audaciously begins by questioning whether an old conclusion still deserves authority over your future.
Key Takeaways
KEY TAKEAWAY #1
A past result doesn't automatically predict a future one because you're bringing a different version of yourself to the experience.
KEY TAKEAWAY #2
Real change requires participation. Tools and practitioners can support the process, but they cannot replace your willingness to change.
KEY TAKEAWAY #3
Skepticism and resistance aren't the same thing. You can question a process while remaining open enough to discover whether it works for you.
KEY TAKEAWAY #4
Sometimes the biggest obstacle isn't a lack of ability. It's the mental noise, old stories and subconscious patterns interfering with what you already know how to do.
Meet Our Guest
Jason Palter is a Certified Hypnotist and owner of the Greater Toronto Hypnosis Centre, which he opened in 2013. He is certified through the National Guild of Hypnotists, trained in Neuro-Linguistic Programming, and has additional training in areas including smoking cessation and weight loss.
His professional journey also extends well beyond hypnosis. Jason has a background in professional magic, performing and corporate speaking, experiences that he says continue to inform his work with clients. His hypnosis practice focuses on personal development and self-improvement in areas including habits, confidence, fears, stress and performance, with both in-person and video sessions available.
That unusual combination of performer and hypnotist gives Jason an interesting perspective on one of the central questions in this conversation: what happens when we become willing to challenge the stories our minds have learned to accept?

Blog Post Title: Your Future Self Is Built by the Decisions You Make Today
The life your future self inherits is quietly being shaped by the choices you make when nobody is applauding, particularly the decision to choose long-term growth over immediate comfort. Audacity can be as simple as consistently doing today what tomorrow's version of you will be grateful you didn't postpone.
Audley's Personal Insights
Something Jason said really stuck with me: how can we decide that something won't work today simply because it didn't work 20 years ago? You're not bringing the same person back to that experience. You've lived, learned, struggled, succeeded and accumulated an entirely different set of experiences.
I've always believed that I stand here as a collection of my experiences. They've given me discernment, understanding, patience and perspective. The challenge is making sure those experiences inform me without imprisoning me.
That's where audacity enters the picture. Sometimes the bold move isn't doing something completely new. It's being willing to revisit something old without assuming you already know how the story ends.
