Episode #707 Read Less, Apply More: Turning Books Into Real-Life Change

“You don't need another book. You need to take action on the books you've already read.”

— Nick Hutchison

What if the next breakthrough in your life doesn't require another book, but action on something you've already learned? Nick Hutchison returns to explore why implementation, patience and community matter more than simply consuming more information.

Episode Summary

Three years after his first appearance on The Audacious Living Podcast, Nick Hutchison returns with a bigger business, a new role as a father and an evolving mission built around a deceptively simple philosophy: read less, apply more.

As founder of BookThinkers and author of Rise of the Reader, Nick has spent years surrounded by books and the people who write them. Yet his experience taught him that consuming more information does not automatically create a better life. Transformation begins when an idea moves from the page into action.

Nick and Audley explore why slow growth deserves more respect, how delayed gratification can serve your future self, and why audacious action doesn't always have to be dramatic. They also dig into the power of community, where discussing, challenging and applying ideas can deepen what we learn.

The conversation gets especially personal as Nick and Audley reflect on fatherhood, modelling possibility for their children and the importance of acting on dreams while there is still time to pursue them.

If your bookshelf is full of great ideas waiting to be used, this conversation might change how you approach your next book.

Key Takeaways

KEY TAKEAWAY #1

Implementation matters more than volume. Reading 100 books means little if none of their ideas change how you live, work or make decisions.

KEY TAKEAWAY #2

Slow progress can still be audacious. Consistency, patience and quiet forward movement often require as much courage as dramatic leaps.

KEY TAKEAWAY #3

Make decisions your future self will appreciate. Delayed gratification means choosing actions today that create opportunities and results tomorrow.

KEY TAKEAWAY #4

Learning becomes stronger in community. Discussing, teaching, questioning and debating ideas can deepen understanding and increase the likelihood that those ideas are actually applied.

Meet Our Guest

Nick Hutchison is the founder and CEO of BookThinkers, a growing platform dedicated to helping readers get more from the books they read and helping authors expand the reach of their ideas.

A bestselling author, keynote speaker, and host of the BookThinkers podcast, Nick is the author of Rise of the Reader: Strategies for Mastering Your Reading Habits and Applying What You Learn. Since launching BookThinkers in 2017, he has built a team focused on author marketing, podcast booking, social media, influencer campaigns, live events, and creating a community around practical personal development.

At the heart of Nick’s work is a simple philosophy: Read Less. Apply More. Rather than measuring success by how many books someone finishes, he encourages readers to turn what they learn into meaningful action. That philosophy now extends into the BookThinkers Book Club, where readers come together around accountability, implementation, and personal growth.

Audacious Insight

Blog Post Title: Your Future Self Is Built by the Decisions You Make Today

The life your future self inherits is quietly being shaped by the choices you make when nobody is applauding, particularly the decision to choose long-term growth over immediate comfort. Audacity can be as simple as consistently doing today what tomorrow's version of you will be grateful you didn't postpone.

Audley's Personal Insights

What stayed with me most from this conversation was the reminder that there is audacity in staying with something long enough to see what it can become.

Nick and I talked about how easy it is to celebrate the big leap while overlooking the quiet steps that came before it. I can relate to that. When Nick first joined me three years ago, this podcast was at episode 221. Now I'm beyond 700. There wasn't one giant moment that created that growth. It was showing up, recording the next conversation and then doing it again.

The same applies to the lessons we pull from books. Knowing something isn't enough. At some point, we have to act on what we know.

Maybe living audaciously isn't always about making the biggest move. Sometimes it's having enough patience, discipline and courage to make the next move, and then keep going.
