Scarborough, Ontario native and spoken word artist Randell Adjei has been named as Ontario’s first Poet Laureate thanks to a private member’s bill introduced by NDP MPP Percy Hatfield and will serve a two-year term as an officer of the legislature. The bill – dubbed the Poet Laureate of Ontario Act In Memory of Gord Downie of the group The Tragically Hip who died in October 2017 after being diagnosed with a terminal brain cancer called Glioblastoma.

Randell is an author, inspirational speaker, arts educator and community leader who uses the spoken word to empower and transform, he is the founder of one of Toronto's largest and longest running youth led initiatives; Reaching Intelligent Souls Everywhere (R.I.S.E Edutainment).

A respected community activist, his responsibilities will include writing poems, promoting literacy in Ontario, and boosting the province’s poets.
